Coach Rutter is going into his twenty-eighth season coaching at the collegiate level and his second as Associate Head Coach of Miami (OH) University.
In his first season at Miami (OH), Rutter made an immediate impact on both the basketball court and the recruiting trail. On the court, Rutter’s innovative, up-tempo offensive enabled the Redhawks to improve their per game scoring average from the previous season. A significant reason for this improvement was the 102 more three-point shots made.
On the recruiting trail, Rutter played an integral role in the signing of four freshman who made an immediate impact for the Redhawks including MAC Freshman of the Year, Nike Sibande.
Prior to his time at Miami (OH), Coach Rutter gained invaluable head coaching experience when he served as the interim head coach at Drake University. While serving as head coach, he was able to improve the team’s win percentage by 22.8%.
From 2006-2013, Coach Rutter coached under Fred Hoiberg and Greg McDermott at Iowa State University, serving as both the Director of Basketball Operations and Assistant Basketball Coach. While at Iowa St., Rutter assisted in recruiting and developing twenty-five student-athletes who went on to play professionally, including seven that played in the NBA.
From 2003-2006, as an assistant coach, Coach Rutter helped the University of Northern Iowa achieve the most prosperous period in program history with a 65-31 record, including three NCAA tournament appearances.
Coach Rutter received the 2006 Literacy Award for directing the “Adopt a Panther” community outreach program.
